There seems to be a love-hate relationship with movie sequels. In an age where it seems the creative talents of Hollywood is a dried up pool of mess, lies the power of the sequel. It's easy money for Hollywood, and regardless of how we feel, we eat them up. So, we've cooked up a list of the top 5 highly anticipated movie sequels of the year. (This list is based on highly anticipated movies overall, is in no particular order, and does not necessarily reflect our opinion. However, we've labeled our top picks on a few of the selections.)

Okay, so maybe it isn't so much of a sequel as it is part of a trilogy. This will be Christopher Nolan's last film of the series, as well as Christian Bale's, as they have previously reported. Watch out for Tom Hardy as Bane and Joseph Gordon Levitt as John Blake. This film is a must see for fans of Nolan's series.

Okay, so it may not be our highly anticipated pick, but there are a lot of fans out there who are looking forward to seeing Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith kick some alien butt. We're also looking forward to watching Josh Brolin as the young Agent K.

Didn't see this one coming, did you? Well, let's just be happy that this installment of the series includes our original cast. We can just pretend those other movies never happened, right? Now, the question really is, have the original fans outgrown this type of humor? The studios probably don't have anything to worry about, there's a whole new generation hungry for pie.

The gods have spoken, they wanted a sequel. I'm anxious to see how this does in the box office. Although the first one was visually striking, and catered to those in love with mythology, we're just not sure there's enough oompff here. We didn't buy Liam Neeson's portrayal of Zeus, King of the gods. But, we are looking forward to seeing Ralph Fiennes reprise his role as Lord Voldemort, uh, we mean Hades.

Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. (Via IMDB)

What fans have been waiting almost a decade for! Peter Jackson returns as director, and you can be sure to catch this story in two installments; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013.) Jackson spoils us again, by not pushing too much into one film. We love you for that.
